Giant floats & a Tuscan winter escape
THE REASON TO GO
Viareggio’s enormous animated carnival floats are the closest companion to Valencia’s sculptural spectacle. The seafront parade is the centrepiece; nearby Lucca and Pisa turn it into an easy short cultural stay.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
First parade: 1873
Viareggio’s first Carnival procession took place on 25 February 1873, when decorated carriages paraded through Via Regia in the old town. The celebration moved to the seafront in 1905. What began as a local street occasion has become a showcase for extraordinary moving sculptures, with satire and spectacle woven into the town’s identity.
The crucial craft breakthrough came in 1925, when Antonio D’Arliano perfected a cast-paper technique that allowed larger, lighter figures. Newspaper, moulds and simple glue became the basis for the giant creations you see today. Their scale is impressive, but so is the human work behind them: artists, builders and costumed performers together turn each float into a travelling stage.

Plan the visitA LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.
Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.
Arrive and take a winter walk along the promenade. Eat early and keep the following day free for Carnival.
Make the 20 February 2027 closing parade the anchor of the trip. Check gate times, seating choices and weather notices with the organiser.
Spend a quieter day inside Lucca’s walls: walk the ramparts, explore its squares and linger over lunch. Do not try to race through Pisa as well.
If departing through Pisa with ample spare time, visit Piazza dei Miracoli. Reserve a tower slot separately if you want to climb; otherwise enjoy the square before the airport.
JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL
Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.
