Two Alsatian old towns, one Christmas journey
THE REASON TO GO
Strasbourg’s grand squares and Colmar’s intimate market streets make a complementary winter break. Choose one hotel base and use the direct train for the other town, keeping time after dusk for the lights. Early December is a useful planning window; each market’s opening dates must be confirmed separately.
Strasbourg / Colmar
Two Alsatian old towns, one Christmas journey
3 nights with an unhurried departure
THE MAIN OCCASION
Scenes from past editions: the scale, colour and atmosphere that make the journey worthwhile.
THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
Strasbourg’s Christkindelsmärik: 1570
Strasbourg’s Christkindelsmärik was established in 1570, giving its Christmas market more than four centuries of recorded history. The Alsatian name means the market of the Christ Child and reflects the city’s Reformation-era changes in seasonal customs. Food, craft and gift trading became a public expression of Christmas that still belongs to the city’s squares rather than to a single enclosed attraction.
Colmar offers another expression of that Alsatian seasonal culture. Its markets are distributed through a historic centre of half-timbered houses and canals, with separate settings rather than one continuous fair. Visiting both towns reveals the range within the tradition: Strasbourg provides monumental scale and a great civic tree, while Colmar encourages slower wandering between small squares. Lights, local baking and craftsmanship connect the two experiences, even though their calendars and programmes are independent.
OUTSIDE THE MAIN EVENT

Plan the visitWalk the canal-side streets and covered bridges in daylight, then revisit nearby market areas after dusk.
Plan the visitFollow the canals and half-timbered streets around the Christmas market circuit, leaving room for warming stops.
Plan the visitA LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.
Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.
Drop your bags and walk to the Christmas squares after dusk. Make this first evening about the lights and a warm meal rather than trying to visit every stall.
Visit the cathedral before the busiest market hours, then explore the different squares slowly. Save an evening return for the great tree at Place Kléber and seasonal food.
Take a direct regional train to Colmar and explore its old-town markets and Little Venice. Stay into the illuminated evening, but check the return train before getting absorbed in the stalls.
Choose a quiet café and one final old-town walk before departure. A Colmar-based trip can reverse days two and three; keep luggage in one base for the whole stay.
JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL
Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.
