Italy · THE COMPLETE SHORT-STAY GUIDE
Contrada pageantry & a race around the Campo
THE REASON TO GO
Siena holds its traditional Palio on 2 July and 16 August each year. This shared guide works for either race: arrive before the final trials, plan your viewing place properly and keep the next morning flexible in case rain delays the event.
2 July or 16 August; the itinerary is relative to either race day.
Historic Siena for walking; a rural resort requires arranged transfers.
Accommodation and confirmed viewing access; retain postponement flexibility.
THE MAIN OCCASION
Scenes from past editions: the scale, colour and atmosphere that make the journey worthwhile.
THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
1633: the race takes its modern arena
Siena’s municipal Palio history places the first race around Piazza del Campo in 1633, building on older horse races through the city. The race is inseparable from the contrade, Siena’s neighbourhood communities, whose symbols, loyalties and ceremonies animate the streets long before the horses enter the square. The painted silk banner awarded to the winner gives the Palio its name and its enduring prize.
The two customary races have distinct dedications: 2 July honours the Madonna di Provenzano and 16 August the Assumption of the Virgin. Their shared structure includes horse selection, trials, ceremonial pageantry and the brief race itself. Visitors see only part of a year-round neighbourhood life; attending with patience and respect makes the days around the race as revealing as the finish.

Plan the visitExplore the former hospital opposite the cathedral, now a museum of monumental rooms and archaeological collections.
Plan the visitWalk the neighbourhood lanes, notice their emblems and visit the square outside race restrictions. This is a living civic tradition, so respect private ceremonies.
Plan the visitA LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.
Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.
Check in and learn the route from your hotel to Piazza del Campo. Explore the contrada streets respectfully, then watch a scheduled trial only after checking public access arrangements.
Visit the Duomo early, allow a slow lunch and return for the published trial programme. Collect paid viewing tickets or confirm balcony instructions before the final day crowds build.
Keep the day free for pageantry and the race. Follow the city’s entry rules and steward instructions for your viewing area, bring water and avoid planning a tight restaurant or transport connection afterwards.
Leave room for delay or postponement before committing to departure. If the race went ahead, enjoy Santa Maria della Scala or a short old-town walk before your transfer.
