THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE

How it began

A livestock fair in 1847

The Feria de Abril began in 1847 as a livestock fair. Buying and selling animals brought people together, and the social side of the gathering gradually became as important as the trade. Food, wine, music and dancing helped turn a commercial meeting into one of Seville’s defining annual celebrations, with horses remaining a visible link to its origins.

Today the fair creates a temporary neighbourhood of casetas at the Real in Los Remedios. These decorated gathering places are central to the event, but many belong to families, clubs or associations and require an invitation. Public casetas give visitors a way into the celebration. By day, horses and carriages fill the avenues; after dark, the illuminated gateway and dancing give the same streets a different rhythm.

OUTSIDE THE MAIN EVENT

Make time for these

02

Cathedral and Giralda

Check cultural visiting hours around religious services before booking.

Plan the visit
03

Triana and the river

Cross to Triana for riverside views and tapas; give neighbourhood streets time beyond the main sights.

Plan the visit

A LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.

Your short-stay plan

Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.

01

Arrive and learn the fairground

Walk the river and Triana before a first visit to the Real. Locate public casetas on the current official map and arrange the journey home.

02

Palace morning, illuminated evening

Book the Alcázar in the morning, rest at the hotel, then return for lights, food and dancing in an accessible caseta.

03

Horses and carriages

Spend a daytime session watching the paseo of horses and carriages. Keep clear of moving animals and leave the afternoon for a long lunch and a rest.

04

Cathedral, then one last Feria night

Visit the cathedral if open for cultural visits. Spend your final evening at the fair; include the closing display only if your dates match the official programme.

05

Unhurried departure

Have breakfast and allow extra airport transfer time. Add a night for Itálica or a longer Triana visit.

JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL

Worth the detour

Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.
