THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
A livestock fair in 1847
The Feria de Abril began in 1847 as a livestock fair. Buying and selling animals brought people together, and the social side of the gathering gradually became as important as the trade. Food, wine, music and dancing helped turn a commercial meeting into one of Seville’s defining annual celebrations, with horses remaining a visible link to its origins.
Today the fair creates a temporary neighbourhood of casetas at the Real in Los Remedios. These decorated gathering places are central to the event, but many belong to families, clubs or associations and require an invitation. Public casetas give visitors a way into the celebration. By day, horses and carriages fill the avenues; after dark, the illuminated gateway and dancing give the same streets a different rhythm.
