Carved masks, bells and a farewell to winter
THE REASON TO GO
Busójárás fills Mohács with sheepskin-clad figures, carved wooden masks and noisy end-of-winter rituals. Make Sunday the central festival day, then balance the spectacle with Pécs’s museums and streets. Four nights are worthwhile because the transfer from the main airports and the journey between the two towns need real time.
Mohács / Pécs
Sunday is the main target; verify the annual parade and bonfire programme.
4 nights and time beyond the festival

Scenes from past editions: the scale, colour and atmosphere that make the journey worthwhile.
THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
Šokci traditions · UNESCO recognition in 2009
Busójárás is the end-of-winter carnival custom of Mohács’s Šokci community, with frightening wooden masks, sheepskin cloaks and loud bells or rattles. A popular local legend links the disguises to driving away Ottoman forces, but it should be understood as a story associated with the custom, rather than proof of how the festival began. The living tradition centres on the seasonal farewell to winter.
UNESCO recognised the festivities in 2009. Its account describes a six-day celebration involving mask carvers, children, processions and ritual fire, including the burning of a coffin that symbolises winter. The spectacle depends on makers and local groups as much as on the crowds watching them. Look closely at the carved masks and the different roles within the procession: they make this a community tradition, not simply a generic costumed parade.

Plan the visitVisit the city’s major church and its layered architectural history. Confirm visitor access around services.
Plan the visitWalk the main square and riverfront around the festival. The setting helps place the masked celebration within the town that sustains it.
Plan the visitA LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.
Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.
Allow most of the day for the onward transfer, then settle into a central hotel. Keep dinner simple and the evening local.
Visit the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter and walk the historic centre. Confirm Sunday’s Mohács transport and return arrangements.
Travel early for the main Sunday programme. Follow the published route for mask groups and the bonfire, giving participants space and arranging your return in advance.
Explore the cathedral and choose an indoor museum or café if the weather is poor. A fourth night gives room to recover from the busy festival day.
Leave enough time for the long airport journey. To see the separate Shrove Tuesday closing ritual, add a night rather than trying to combine it with departure.
