THE MAIN OCCASION
Scenes from past editions: the scale, colour and atmosphere that make the journey worthwhile.
THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
From pilgrimage to a named wine battle
The setting matters as much as the wine: the festivities take participants from Haro to the Riscos de Bilibio and the hermitage of San Felices. The day retains the structure of a pilgrimage, with religious observances preceding the exuberant soaking. Regional wine institution Vivanco describes wine throwing as already customary by 1949, when the name Batalla del Vino became established.
The celebration received Spain’s designation of National Tourist Interest in 2011. Its international reputation now sits beside a distinctly local rhythm: an early ascent, a communal battle and a return to the town’s celebrations. A winery visit on another day gives the spectacle useful context, showing the barrels, cellars and railway quarter that underpin Haro’s identity as a Rioja wine town.
OUTSIDE THE MAIN EVENT
Book a guided winery visit in Haro’s Barrio de la Estación; tasting is a separate, quieter experience from the battle.
Plan the visitExplore the cluster of historic wineries whose growth followed the railway and Rioja’s export trade.
Plan the visitMake time for the Herradura and Haro’s historic streets, keeping festival morning free of other bookings.
Plan the visitA LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.
Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.
Settle into your base, walk Haro’s old town and eat around the Herradura. Confirm the battle transfer, departure point and a dry change of clothes with your accommodation.
Visit a booked bodega in the Barrio de la Estación, leaving the afternoon easy. Prepare white clothes, a red scarf, sturdy shoes and waterproof storage; arrange an early breakfast.
Leave early for Bilibio on 29 June and follow the official pilgrimage and battle arrangements. Return to Haro for town celebrations, shower and rest before a gentle evening meal.
If onward timing permits, visit Briones or the Vivanco museum before leaving Rioja. Do not squeeze a tasting between a hurried checkout and a long drive.
JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL
