Flowers open the doors of the old city
THE REASON TO GO
Temps de Flors turns Girona’s Barri Vell into a trail of installations in courtyards, gardens and historic buildings. Staying overnight lets you return after the day-trip crowds and fit the flower route around the city’s Jewish history, medieval baths and walls. Keep one full day free for the festival and choose fewer spaces with more time in each.
Girona city is the most practical base; these five-star resorts are outside it.
May dates remain pending for both years.

THE MAIN OCCASION
Scenes from past editions: the scale, colour and atmosphere that make the journey worthwhile.
THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
A flower exhibition begun in 1954
Girona’s own account traces Temps de Flors to a small provincial flower exhibition organised in 1954. A group of enthusiasts staged it in a municipal setting, and the response encouraged a larger event. As interest grew, the exhibition moved through different historic venues, including Sant Pere de Galligants and Sant Domènec, before spreading into the courtyards and gardens of the Barri Vell.
Local associations helped give the event its enduring character. From the late 1970s and early 1980s, flower and heritage groups brought more spaces into the exhibition and persuaded neighbours to open private patios. The city council became firmly involved in 1992. Today’s installations retain that combination of creative design, volunteer effort and access to otherwise hidden architecture: the flowers reveal the city as much as decorate it.
OUTSIDE THE MAIN EVENT
Explore the story of medieval Catalan Jewish communities in the Call, including Girona’s own surviving traces.
Plan the visitVisit the small medieval bathhouse, inspired by several bathing traditions despite its familiar name. Check festival access separately.
Plan the visitLink the Barri Vell’s lanes and defensive enclosures, taking breaks for the steep steps. Adapt the wall walk to the open entrances and your mobility.
Plan the visitA LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.
Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.
Check in and cross the river bridges for your first view of the old town. Pick a small flower-route section if the exhibition is open; save the busiest indoor spaces for tomorrow.
Start early with the current festival map. Follow a compact route through the Barri Vell, accepting one-way systems and queues. Pause for a long lunch, then revisit the city after the busiest hours.
Visit the Museum of Jewish History and the Arab Baths. Walk an accessible section of the walls if the weather and access suit, then choose one final installation rather than rushing the whole map.
Leave after breakfast. Besalú or the Costa Brava make rewarding extensions, but a three-night festival break works best with Girona as its main focus.
JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL
Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.
