THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE

How it began

1843: neighbourhood fêtes become a city festival

The Ghent Festivities began in 1843, when numerous neighbourhood celebrations were brought together into a municipal feast. The city’s own anniversary account traces that consolidation to Ghent’s industrial bourgeoisie. Over time the gathering developed into a broad urban cultural festival, with music, theatre and popular entertainment sharing the same streets rather than following one narrow artistic theme.

That diversity still explains the experience: one square may host a large concert while another offers children’s animation or street theatre. The organiser describes free public access as part of the festival’s identity from its beginnings, although particular ticketed events should still be checked individually. The cancellations in 2020 and 2021 interrupted a long continuity; the return in 2022 reaffirmed the Feesten as a communal summer ritual for Ghent.

01

Gravensteen

Visit the Castle of the Counts before the central streets get busy; its fortified rooms and towers offer a different view of Ghent.

03

Belfry and canal quays

Climb the Belfry if open, then walk the Graslei and Korenlei for the city’s historic waterfront.

Plan the visit

A LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.

Your short-stay plan

Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.

01

Opening-weekend arrival

Arrive by rail, settle into your hotel and walk the Graslei and Korenlei. Choose a first performance from the published programme and learn your walking route back before the late crowds build.

02

Castle and street theatre

Visit Gravensteen early, then explore Patershol and a daytime street-theatre session. Rest before dinner and choose a single evening concert area rather than trying to cover every square.

03

Art, canals and music

Book the Ghent Altarpiece at St Bavo’s Cathedral, then take a quieter canal walk or boat trip. Let the afternoon programme set your pace and leave the evening open for the performance that most appeals.

04

Belfry and departure

If your train allows, visit the Belfry or enjoy breakfast away from the busiest festival square. Travel back via Gent-Sint-Pieters with enough time for the airport rail connection.

JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL

Worth the detour

Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.

AN EXTRA REASON TO STAY

Bruges

For an extra day, take the train to Bruges for canals and medieval streets. Keep the three-night festival stay focused on Ghent and add this before or afterwards.
