THE REASON TO GO

Festivity of Saint Blaise

THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE

How it began

Celebrated since 972

Dubrovnik’s tourist board traces the first Feast of Saint Blaise to 972. The saint’s image, holding the city in his hand, appears on its walls and entrances, expressing a relationship between civic identity and religious devotion that has endured for centuries. UNESCO recognised the festivity as intangible cultural heritage in 2009, acknowledging the community practices that keep it alive.

The eve of the feast includes bells, the release of white doves and the traditional blessing of throats. On 3 February, banner bearers arrive in folk costume for the procession through the old city. Their parishes connect Dubrovnik with the surrounding communities. The celebration is therefore more than an impressive setting for photographs: it renews bonds between people, place and faith, and visitors should make space for those taking part.

01

Dubrovnik’s city walls

Walk the fortified circuit for rooftops and sea views on a calm day. The exposed sections are less enjoyable in strong winter wind.

03

Old harbour and Stradun

Walk the waterfront and civic centre between ceremonies. Look for images of Saint Blaise on the buildings and gates.

A LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.

Your short-stay plan

Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.

01

Arrive beside the old town

Check in and take a first walk along Stradun and the old harbour. Eat early and use the evening to find your route to the Church of Saint Blaise.

02

Walls and the opening ceremonies

Walk the walls in settled weather, then return for the eve-of-feast rituals around the church. Check the official programme for exact times.

03

Saint Blaise’s day

Give the day to the procession, parish banners and traditional dress. Museums close for the feast, so save indoor sightseeing for another day.

04

A museum visit and departure

If your flight allows, visit the Rector’s Palace before leaving. Check the museum’s winter hours and leave enough time for the airport transfer.

JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL

Worth the detour

Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.

THE PRACTICAL BIT

Getting there

Airport Dubrovnik / Ruđer Bošković (DBV)

On arrival The Platanus airport shuttle serves the old-town area and Gruž bus station. A booked hotel transfer is useful for Lapad or an arrival with limited winter services.

Getting around Walk within the old town. Use a local bus or taxi between Lapad and the festival, allowing for road restrictions and the procession.
