Sardinian dress, devotion and a seaside city
THE REASON TO GO
On 1 May, villages from across Sardinia bring their traditional dress, decorated ox carts and music to Cagliari for Sant’Efisio. The statue then travels towards Nora before returning on 4 May. A three-night stay catches the great city departure and leaves time for Castello and the coast; extend if the return matters to you.
Central Cagliari keeps the 1 May procession within walking reach.
The city departure is 1 May; the late return is 4 May.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
1652 vow · annual procession since 1657
Sant’Efisio’s celebration renews a promise made by Cagliari during the plague of 1652. The city invoked the martyr’s protection, and the annual pilgrimage has been held since 1657. Rather than circling a single church, it carries his statue from Stampace towards the coastal place of martyrdom at Nora, then brings it home. The journey turns the city’s vow into a shared act of devotion.
Representatives from villages across Sardinia join the departure in traditional clothes, accompanied by musicians, horse riders and decorated carts. Flowers laid on the road form the ritual of sa ramadura. These details are living practices maintained by communities and confraternities, rather than costumes created for tourists. The public procession on 1 May is the most accessible city moment; the return on 4 May closes the pilgrimage.
OUTSIDE THE MAIN EVENT
Climb through the old fortified quarter, linking its cathedral streets and bastion viewpoints. Uneven slopes make comfortable shoes useful.
Plan the visitGive Sardinia’s ancient cultures a proper morning in the museum at the top of Castello; check opening days before choosing your slot.
Plan the visitTrade the procession crowds for Cagliari’s long urban beach. A bus or taxi avoids turning the outing into a parking exercise.
Plan the visitA LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.
Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.
Settle into the Marina or a central hotel, then climb to the bastions for a first look over the harbour. Eat early and check the official procession route.
Dedicate 1 May to Sant’Efisio. Find a place along the published route before the crowds deepen; traditional dress, decorated carts and the flower-strewing ritual deserve an unhurried morning. Keep lunch flexible.
Visit the National Archaeological Museum in Castello, then take a bus or taxi to Poetto for a long lunch and a beach walk. The pilgrimage has moved outside the city; this is a slower Cagliari day.
Leave after breakfast. This plan departs before the 4 May return: add two nights if you want to see that late homecoming, or an extra coast day.
