La Tomatina

La Tomatina is a ticketed tomato fight in Buñol, inland from Valencia. Stay in the city for markets, architecture and a comfortable recovery day, but treat the Wednesday excursion as the trip’s main event: admission, early transport and a clean journey home need planning together.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE

How it began

First tomato fight: 1945

La Tomatina’s origin is traced to the last Wednesday of August 1945, when young people pushed into a parade of musicians, giants and big-headed figures in Buñol. A participant fell, a scuffle broke out and tomatoes from a nearby vegetable stall became improvised ammunition. The next year, participants returned with their own tomatoes, turning an unruly moment into a recurring local custom.

Authorities banned the fight during parts of the 1950s, but local support kept it alive; a mock tomato funeral became one expression of that resistance. The celebration eventually gained acceptance and international fame. Its present ticketing, controlled entry and battle rules reflect that growth: a short, intense event still rooted in Buñol’s summer festivities, now attracting visitors from far beyond the town.

03

A proper paella lunch

Reserve a relaxed lunch rather than trying to fit it into the busy final evening. The beach or El Palmar makes a change from the centre.

Plan the visit

A LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.

Your short-stay plan

Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.

01

Tuesday in Valencia

Arrive early enough to collect tickets and confirm the Buñol departure point. Take an old-town walk, have dinner and prepare clothes you can get dirty.

02

Wednesday: La Tomatina

Travel early on a prearranged transfer or checked public-transport service. Follow official entry and battle rules, then allow time to rinse and change before returning to Valencia.

03

A slower Valencia day

Recover with a market breakfast and a shaded walk through the Turia gardens. Make a long paella lunch the centre of the day; choose the beach if energy and weather suit.

04

Friday departure

Have a relaxed breakfast and travel home. Add a night for an Albufera excursion rather than rushing it into the Tomatina travel day.

JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL

Worth the detour

Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.

AN EXTRA REASON TO STAY

Albufera and El Palmar

Add a wetlands boat trip and rice-country lunch after the festival. Reserve the boat and transport separately.

THE PRACTICAL BIT

Getting there

Airport Valencia Airport (VLC), then a separate excursion to Buñol.

On arrival Metrovalencia lines 3 and 5 connect the airport with Valencia. For festival morning, reserve an authorised coach package or check Renfe’s current C3 arrangements and departure station.

Getting around Buñol access is crowded and controlled during the fight. Plan the walk from your arrival point, the return boarding location and time to change; Valencia metro and walking work for the other days.
