A tomato battle, with Valencia as your base
THE REASON TO GO
La Tomatina is a ticketed tomato fight in Buñol, inland from Valencia. Stay in the city for markets, architecture and a comfortable recovery day, but treat the Wednesday excursion as the trip’s main event: admission, early transport and a clean journey home need planning together.
3 nights, with the festival at the centre of the trip.
25 August 2027 and 30 August 2028 follow the last-Wednesday tradition; edition programmes and admission details remain pending.
Buy authorised admission and arrange the Buñol journey together.
THE MAIN OCCASION
Scenes from past editions: the scale, colour and atmosphere that make the journey worthwhile.
THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
First tomato fight: 1945
La Tomatina’s origin is traced to the last Wednesday of August 1945, when young people pushed into a parade of musicians, giants and big-headed figures in Buñol. A participant fell, a scuffle broke out and tomatoes from a nearby vegetable stall became improvised ammunition. The next year, participants returned with their own tomatoes, turning an unruly moment into a recurring local custom.
Authorities banned the fight during parts of the 1950s, but local support kept it alive; a mock tomato funeral became one expression of that resistance. The celebration eventually gained acceptance and international fame. Its present ticketing, controlled entry and battle rules reflect that growth: a short, intense event still rooted in Buñol’s summer festivities, now attracting visitors from far beyond the town.
OUTSIDE THE MAIN EVENT
Pair the Gothic silk exchange with the market district. Check opening hours, especially around the festival holiday.
Plan the visitUse the former riverbed park as a calmer walking route, finishing around the City of Arts and Sciences.
Plan the visitReserve a relaxed lunch rather than trying to fit it into the busy final evening. The beach or El Palmar makes a change from the centre.
Plan the visitA LITTLE STRUCTURE. PLENTY OF ROOM TO WANDER.
Arrange the festival day around the confirmed programme, then shift the surrounding days to suit your arrival.
Arrive early enough to collect tickets and confirm the Buñol departure point. Take an old-town walk, have dinner and prepare clothes you can get dirty.
Travel early on a prearranged transfer or checked public-transport service. Follow official entry and battle rules, then allow time to rinse and change before returning to Valencia.
Recover with a market breakfast and a shaded walk through the Turia gardens. Make a long paella lunch the centre of the day; choose the beach if energy and weather suit.
Have a relaxed breakfast and travel home. Add a night for an Albufera excursion rather than rushing it into the Tomatina travel day.
JUST BEYOND THE FESTIVAL
Choose one outing for a short stay. Add another night if you want to explore further at an easy pace.
