THE STORY BEHIND THE SPECTACLE
Origins: 1860 · named in 1925
The Fête du Lac grew from the lavish Venetian-style lake festivities held for Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie on 29 August 1860, after Savoie became part of France. Illuminated boats and fireworks made the imperial visit memorable, building on an older local tradition of waterborne spectacles for visiting rulers.
The celebration developed gradually rather than running unchanged every year from 1860. A dedicated night show emerged in 1924, and the festival committee gave it the name Fête du Lac in 1925. Music, light and water effects now join the fireworks, but the essential idea remains the same: the lake becomes the stage, with reflections and surrounding mountains giving the performance its setting.
